Overview

Outlast II is a first-person survival horror game developed and published by Red Barrels. It is the sequel to the 2013 game Outlast and was released on April 25, 2017, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation four, and Xbox One.

The game is set in the same universe as the first one but takes place in a different location and time. The story follows Blake Langermann, a cameraman working with his wife, Lynn. The two are investigative journalists trying to uncover the truth behind the murder of a pregnant woman known only as Jane Doe. Their investigation leads them to the remote village of Temple Gate, Colorado, where they discover that something truly evil is lurking in the shadows.

Gameplay

Outlast II is a first-person survival horror game played from the perspective of Blake Langermann, and as such, most of the scares come from not being able to see what’s happening around you. Like its predecessor, the game is a linear experience with very little combat. The player must rely on stealth and running to avoid enemies, as well as using hideouts such as lockers and cupboards to escape detection. The game also introduces a new mechanic called “survivor sense”, which allows the player to see enemies through walls and identify their patrol routes.

The Setting

One of the things that make Outlast II so scary is its atmosphere. The game is set in a remote town called Mount Massive. There’s something about being in the middle of nowhere that just feels eerie and unnerving. And when you add in the fact that there’s a murderous cult running around, it makes for a truly terrifying experience.

The scenes are much of it take place at night or in dark, cramped spaces for most of the time. Coupled with the fact that enemies can pop out at any time, this makes for a truly harrowing experience. This, combined with the excellent sound design, creates an incredibly tense and oppressive feeling that gets under your skin. The graphics are also top-notch and help to bring the nightmarish world of Outlast II to life.

The game also does an excellent job of building tension. There are moments when you’ll be hiding under a bed, waiting for an enemy to pass by, and your heart will be pounding in your chest the whole time.

The setting and graphics are not the only things that make Outlast II scary. The game also features some gruesome and disturbing scenes, from enemies mutilating corpses to horrifically disfigured creatures that will haunt your nightmares. In short, Outlast II is not for the faint of heart.
